Meeting with a beggar child

Meeting with a “Talibé” in the City of Saint-Louis , Senegal , West Africa

This is not a surprise to meet with a beggar child, commonly knows as “talibé”, outside the city of Saint-Louis .
During my last Bajito Onda journey in Saint-Louis , I came to meet with a beggar boy called Modou Diaw. Aged from six (6) years, I met with him in my way early before eight (8) in the morning holding out a big empty tomato can that serves him to collect items such as money and foods. I saw him running out the streets without any shoes on his feet wearing out a small pants with an old and dirty shirt in rag while it got really cold in such streets. Modou whose father is dead of Malaria came to Saint-Louis by walk from his native village called “Teud Bitti” which is located between Louga and Saint-Louis and where the extreme poverty deserves. Modou who is begging since this time in Saint-Louis is supposed to feed himself and to help his mother who has stayed in the poor village of “Teud Bitti”. He lives in the street in the middle of downtown with a group of what is referred to as “faxman” - ‘Wolof’ term to designate people who, as a result of the damage of familial relations, decide to deliberately make a breaking with their parents in leaving them to elope in places unknown to them - who has set themselves up under the market stalls of Sor, Saint-Louis . He uses to beg every day from seven (7) a: m to night (9) p: m. For that he gets any times for leisure except when he plays with his buddies outside the streets during the begging times.
He has already joined a gang of little “talibé” forced by “faxmen” to steal and sell drugs and marijuana in the streets. He is also exploited by some tourists giving him money to sex with him.
The begging look like a strong struggle for this young boy because he is obliged to beg at least the sum of USD1 a day while his begging square is frequented by lots of child and adult beggars.
The original meaning appointing a “talibé” like a young pupil at a koranic school studying with a “marabout” (koranic teacher) does not work for Modou Diaw. He has never been to school. Neither to a French school nor to a koranic school. Perhaps the street is his official school.
His only dream is to join the Bajito Onda Educational training programs for Children.

From the Begging of Talibé (Beggar children) to the juvenile delinquency

Many Talibés (beggar children) desert what is referred to as "daaras" (koranic house) to join bands of delinquents, paedophiles, receivers and narcotrafiquants which transforms them into a slave of sex or drug pushers. They grow thus in the delinquency and end up becoming Faxman (attackers) or Boudiouman (people eating in dutsbins).

Categorization of the street children in Senegal

The street children can be classified in four main categories:
1) the children entrusted by their parents to marabouts(koranic teacher) for the training of the coran;
2) the children resulting from the poor families living in the street;
3 the children in difficult situation (children in situation of conflict with the law, children in moral danger, children victims of family violences or parents separated, orphan, young doped or delinquents in rupture with their family, children given up by their parents, handicapped children, etc.) ;
4 the street children meadows of their residences or excluded from the education system.

INTRODUCTION TO BAJITO ONDA AFRICA FOUNDATION

INTRODUCTION TO BAJITO ONDA
AFRICA FOUNDATION

HISTORY

Bajito Onda Comunity Development foundation is
established as a registrated organization in the
Gambia (West Africa) on May, 2004.
The foundation is inspired on the model developed by
Del Hendrixson, the founder and chief executive officer
(CEO) of the Bajito Onda Movement,in the mid 1980’s in
Dallas city-Texas/USA. Hendrixson developed the model
of The Hope Reintegration Habitat, a gang prevention
and intervention program designed to reintegrate young
people and adults returning from prisons or
correctional institutions back into society.
The model was developed based on the philosophy that
persons who had been involved in criminal activities
and street gangs need positive alternatives in order
to improve their lives and become self-sufficient and
reliable in their community. The model was established
in an effort to break the cycle of recidivism by
helping to restore dignity and hope on the lives of
ex-offenders in order for these people to build or
regain dignity.
Bajito Onda gave street gang members and
ex-convicts/parolees an opportunity to turn in a new
life through work by creating products to earn
income.Thereby giving an alternative to those who have
fallen from the society so as to increase global
economy. Today, Bajito Onda serves as a community
US-based international organization, using Hendrixson
philosophy to empower women and children in Africa.

DEFINITION

Bajito Onda Foundation appears in Africa as a Human
Rights, Peace, Justice and development oriented, non
profit, non discriminatory, charity organization
established to coordinate and promote non violent
practices and community development programmes and
services through offering positive educational
alternatives/choices for youths and communities, to
street life, crime, drugs addiction and dependence,
prison etc.
Thus we design creative hands on development
programmes for disadvantaged youths/young women, drug
addicts etc. And also offer trauma/stress counseling
to those individuals with dysfunctional family
circumstances. One of its main focuses is to advocate
for issues relating to the protection and development
of vulnerable group in the African Society. Paramount
among which are issues relating to Women, Children and
youths generally.

STRUCTURE

Bajito Onda Africa Staff consists of :

Mr Papa Mao Fall Ndiaye--Continent Director and Development Director.
The Staff is appointed, suspended and discharged by the
Board, which also supervises the policy pursued and
approves the Annual Accounts of the organization.

POLICY

Bajito Onda Africa empowers women and
children.Today many women and children in Africa are
the victims of rejects in the society. The main reasons
for this are the lack of access to and participation
in political decision-making and the lack of access to
education and health facilities.
Bajito Onda Africa can provide different forms of
assistance to fill the need of the targeted
community. When providing assistance it is the policy
of Bajito Onda Africa to directly involve in the
community need in finding ways to help solve it.It is
not the policy of Bajito Onda Africa to give funds to
any community based organizations. Nor to distribute
money to targeted groups.
